The caves
This historic peasant dwelling, abandoned in 1959 after a national decree called for the evacuation of Matera’s Sassi, is now completely restored and ready to welcome two to six guests within its caves.
The rooms have been created in the original spaces of this historic home, completely dug out of what is commonly called “tuft” – the local limestone that forms the rocky ridge from which the Sassi rise.
Within the reception area, which gives access to the two rooms, a common area has been created where you can just relax and take a break or enjoy a good coffee.
Breakfast is included in your booking and is served in a nearby café.
The two bedrooms have identical facilities.
Deluxe
The “Deluxe” room has a double bed and a “French bed” which is on the room’s loft. The old wood-burning oven of the original peasant dwelling has been transformed into a fireplace that gives this room a timeless charm.
